Parish Council Minutes

September 21st, 2009

The Parish Council Meeting was called to order by Father Eric Filmer on Monday, September 21st, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Eric opened the meeting with prayer.

Minutes were reviewed for corrections.

ATTENDANCE: Mike Fuches, Phyllis Fuches, Father Eric Filmer, Richard Fetterman, Joseph Rodriguez and Mary Walsh.

OLD BUSINESS

  1. October Parish Picnic: Final plans for picnic were discussed. Hispanics will be purchasing and cooking food this year. All families will bring a dish. Youth will plan games. Picnic will begin at 2:00 p.m. and plan to eat around 4:00 p.m. R.B. Wright playground has been reserved along with two portable toilets.
  2.

  3. Celia Heningman has been hired to do the stained windows for the Church. Father Eric will be sending drawings of images to the Stained Glass Windows committee and donators for review.
  4.

  5. Joseph Rodriguez said the shadow box has been made for the memorabilia of Barbara Duffy.
  6.

  7. Statue of Mary is still leaning. Joe Sumner said he would have his men straighten her up.

NEW BUSINESS

  1. Joe Rodriguez mentioned that more space was needed for the Youth classes in the old office. He suggested the center wall be removed by some of the Parish men to make one big class room. Being a center wall, Fr. Eric will need to get a professional in case the wall helps support the building along with the insurance due to any accidents if Parish members remove wall. A/C works good in the old office.
  2.

  3. Gartland Awards: John and Beverly Ferrell were recommended for the Garland Award, but they felt this year would not be a good time to be nominated for the award because of John’s health and upcoming surgery. Several in the Parish were considered from English and Hispanic. Due to their participation in the Church, the Council recommended Mark Russell and Luz Cooper for the Gartland Awards. Both have contributed much in the Parish activities.

Fr. Eric will meet with them about the awards and will submit pictures and the paperwork to the Diocese.
  4.

  5. Ladies Guild met September 10th at Mary’s home. They prayed the Rosary. Sharon White brought a rainbow wig and shawl for Phil to wear in order for him to join them. Activities for September are the following:

    • Seven ladies have paid their $10 dues.
    • Provided food for the Serenity House. There is currently 50 people within their three houses. Different churches help them. Serenity House has just received a grant to help them.
    • Mailed a box of goodies to the troops in Iraq. First two weeks in October, will mail another box. Will put a list in bulletin for needed items.
    • Gave two baskets of baby clothes and supplies for newborn babies at the Colquitt Regional Medical Center Nursery.
    • Plan to sponsor a seminary student who has no family here. We have asked Fr. Matthew to help them with this.
    • Voted to make goodies for the Oncology Department for patients having chemotherapy.

The next meeting is scheduled October 1st.
  6.

  7. Richard Fetterman handed out the Financial Report. The Budget has been completed for the year. The budget was close to the actual expenses for this year. The checking account is $33,900 and the savings account is $10,184. Upcoming expenditures are Confirmation, Catechism, CCD books and supplies. Joseph stated they have around 100 youth this year.
  8.

  9. Joseph and Anna want to paint the CCD classrooms in the Walsh Hall a brighter color for the children. He also mentioned if the Library Room could be locked so the kids won’t go in and get books out of order. Father mentioned that it should be locked except during Mass and special functions, etc.
  10.

  11. Father Eric stated he was considering rescheduling Monday’s 6:00 p.m. Mass and the Parish Council Meeting due to his days off. The Diocese recommends priests to have days off. Most of them take Sunday evening and the following day off.

His vision is to reschedule Monday 6:00 p.m. Mass to Thursday at 6:00 p.m. of each week and have another Mass on Tuesday’s at 12:15 p.m. for the working people.

Parish Council meeting will be changed to the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Having no further business, the meeting was adjourned around 8:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Eric closed the meeting with a prayer.
